The Lithuanian Expatriate Art Foundation together with Lewben Art Foundation and the publishing house of Vilnius Academy of Art has just issued a monograph of Kęstutis Zapkus. It is the first comprehensive introduction of the biography and creative path of the New York based artist Kęstutis Zapkus. Zapkus is one of the best known Lithuanian artists living in the USA with the painting practice deeply rooted in the New York school of painting. In his works the artist combines abstraction with social research; images are based on principles of musical composition and architectural structuring of space. In the early 1990s Zapkus taught at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and with the generation of his students stimulated changes in the Lithuanian art scene.

119 works are reproduced in this book. Texts by Laima Kreivytė, Lucy R. Lippard, Sandra Skurvida, Marjorie Welish and the painter Kęstučio Zapkaus himself are presented in two languages – Lithuanian and English.

Moreover, on April 11, 2014 an exhibition “Kęstutis Zapkus. A Retrospective of Painting“ opened its doors at the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius. Therefore, according to the exhibition curator Laima Kreivytė, the viewer can read the book as the story of his career, and also as a spatial and conceptual guide to the exhibition, the function of which is to help us find our way around the complicated but intriguing world of modern painting.
